DIY A Large Pallet Chalkboard (Budget-Friendly!)

I'k a newbie when it comes to woodworking projects, so a trip to the local lumber store is always entertaining. I usually bring in a sketch and explain to the guys what I'one thousand working on, and I'm pretty sure they think I'm nuts a lot of the time. Since I unremarkably have no thought what size/blazon of forest I'm looking for, they let me wander effectually the dorsum with them until I spot something that I like.

Well-nigh recently, I headed to the lumber store in search of a large, thin lath that could be the base of operations of a giant chalkboard I wanted to brand to make full an empty wall in our dining room. DIY A Large Pallet Chalkboard

This project was quite affordable, and but requires a few bones tools and supplies.

Supply List:

• Pallet Boards (or i×4's) For Frame
• Thin MDF Lath Cutting To Desired Size
• Chalkboard Paint
• Paint or Stain For Frame
• Pigment Brush
• Wood Filler
• Minor Saw (I used this jigsaw attachment for my drill)
• Drill
• Electric Sander (I accept this attachment for my drill)
• Small Screws (Slightly shorter than the thickness of your MDF + pallet board)
• Square

i | Cut Pallet Boards For Frame

Since your MDF board is already cut to size, all that's left to cut are pallet boards for the frame. Any saw you have should piece of work for this. I don't have much for tools, so I used a jigsaw attachment for my drill. Make sure you use a square to marking a straight cut line before you lot start cutting.

Lay the pallet boards along the side of your MDF and marker them about an inch longer than the MDF. If your pallet boards aren't long plenty to comprehend the unabridged length of the MDF, cut two shorter pallet boards to total the full length plus an inch.

Adjacent, line the cutting pallet boards upward on top of the MDF, letting them hang over the edge slightly. Measure the distance betwixt them and cut two shorter pallet boards to fit.

2 | Sand Lumber

I didn't accept a roller handy, and so I used a regular bristle castor instead. I was a worried it would be streaky, merely it did dry smooth. A roller would cover the big board a lot faster, though.

While the chalkboard pigment is drying, paint the pallet boards for your frame. These can exist absolutely any color of paint or stain y'all like. I used a grey/tan chalk paint that I had on mitt, and then dry brushed a bit of darker grayness over elevation to give it a slightly worn look.

For this step, line up everything upside down so you can drill screws in from the back of the MDF board through the pallet wood. Finally, use forest filler to fill in any gaps at the joints in the frame. You lot tin can see a joint in the photo beneath. I filled it with woods filler and touched up the paint.

This chalkboard is quite large and heavy, and so use a stud finder to exist sure you hang it up on a stud if you plan to hang it.
